Whittmore Learning Academy offers four learning programs that build upon each other. Each program stems from our learn-through-play philosophy and offers an age-appropriate curriculum and activities. All of our students are placed based not only on age but also on their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. In addition to these learning programs, the center offers several enrichment programs that benefit our student's development. Below is a short synopsis of each program with its respective voluntary enhanced teacher-to-student ratio.
Teacher-to-Student Ratio of 1:6
In our Young Toddlers classroom, we emphasize nurturing and "hands-on" learning. We engage and build upon the children's curiosity through reading, songs, and activities that touch on all five of their senses.
In addition to their cognitive and social development, we know that children must be physically active to be healthy and happy. Our Young Toddlers program promotes the development of each child's fine and gross motor skills through art and purposeful play.
Teacher-to-Student Ratio of 1:9
As children advance, so does their interest in themselves and their surroundings. In our Toddler classroom, we strive to guide the children in their daily activities and interactions to continue their progress in all development areas.
Since children at this stage are often on the go, we utilize a learn-through-play approach allowing children to learn about the world around them while having fun. Two-year-olds are also beginning to communicate verbally with the world. Teachers aid in students' language acquisition through age-appropriate speech, reading, and cooperative play.
Teacher-to-Student Ratio of 1:10
The world of a three-year-old is ever expanding as they engage in more sophisticated conversation, increase the number and size of their socialization groups, and are more curious about the universe and how they fit in it. They are becoming more independent and confident in their abilities.
In our Early Pre-K classroom, the teachers work with the students on attention and patience as we lengthen circle time and their activity time spans. We also work with the students in small groups to build on their interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Teacher-to-Student Ratio of 1:13
Students in our Pre-K program have the desire to explore and investigate aspects of the world and community. The teacher’s role transitions to a facilitator to help the children find answers to their questions.
In the Pre-K program, we continue developing the fundamentals children need for effective lifetime learning. These include being a good listener, having respect for others, and having the ability to focus for long periods. Each student’s day consists of creative and fun activities that help develop reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Young children are the perfect age to learn a new language. For this reason, the center offers our Early Pre-K and Pre-K students a Spanish program. The students explore their world in Spanish during storytelling, dramatic play, art, and musical activities.
As a supplement to our language programs, we offer a Sign Language program to our students. Research shows that Baby and American Sign Language increase a child’s confidence and self-esteem by improving their overall communication skills. Additional benefits of sign language include enhanced fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and inclusion of communication with those with hearing disabilities. Sign language starts in our Young Toddler classroom and continues throughout the school.
Physical activity is essential to a child’s overall development and happiness. Therefore, we offer the Soccer Shots Program at the center (for an additional fee) for children two years old and up. To view detailed information about this program, please click the link below.
